Choose Lobster! An All Year Round Favorite

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - Choose lobster king of the crustaceans, an all year round favorite, which can be especially enjoyable during the summer. Many of us think that all shellfish are high in dietary cholesterol, but lobster happens to have just about the lowest amount of all. While it's still summer, let's choose Lobster, especially if we're watching our cholesterol intake too. How does Lobster compare to other high protein food sources for cholesterol, fat and calories?

Shellfish in general is a much lower calorie choice than red meat or any meat for that matter. Many clients are surprised when I tell them to almost double the ounces per serving when choosing shellfish because it has less than half the calories as meat for the same serving size. For example, the average ground beef hamburger has about 80- 100 calories per ounce while lobster has about 30 calories per ounce (Shrimp has the same calories as lobster)! Ah, but what about cholesterol? Lobster contains about 60 mg of cholesterol per each 3 oz. serving, while a 3 ounce lean hamburger has about 85 mg. for each 3 oz. serving. Want to compare this to shrimp known for its high cholesterol? Shrimp has about 165 mg. of cholesterol for the same 3 ounce serving.

Aside from being lower in calories and cholesterol, let's look a little closer. Lobster has slightly less than 3 grams of total fat in our 3 ounce portion with only 1 gram of saturated fat. Let's compare this to our 3 ounce ground beef patty. Our small hamburger has 15 grams of total fat, and this includes 6 grams of pure saturated fat. Saturated fat in our diet is the "bad guy" that contributes to our high serum cholesterol levels, more than dietary cholesterol intake.

So now that we've compared lobster to an animal meat (this includes chicken not de-skinned or de-boned), we see that we have a much lower calorie, much lower total saturated fat, and a lower cholesterol choice. Let's not forget that we can eat more of it for the same calories if we want to (as long as we don't add fat to it)!

Lobster is a great summer choice because we can eat it grilled using my favorite low calorie butter spray, eat it cold or warm in salads as well as boiled, broiled or steamed. Chilled lobster is really sweet and low calorie/low cholesterol option without the dreaded calorie -laden drawn butter. Instead, let's choose a low-fat sauce to serve on the side or a healthy light flavored extra virgin olive oil as part of a vinaigrette dressing in a summer salad. Let's choose a lobster cocktail instead of a shrimp cocktail if we are concerned with cholesterol. And let's get creative; let's look for low-fat versions of lobster bisque or we can just substitute either a low-fat milk or a low-fat evaporated milk for the usual cream. Anyway we serve it, lobster is a great summer choice.

Isn't Lobster a great choice for summer?
