(HealthNewsDigest.com) – WASHINGTON, — Today, Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) announced that the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) is allotting approximately $1.2 million of the $20 million lung cancer research appropriation established last year to fund “Concept Award” applications.

“Concept Awards” are research proposals that will support the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory that addresses an important problem relevant to lung cancer. They are not intended to support a logical progression of an already established research project but, instead, would allow investigators the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations.

The award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Research completed through a “Concept Award” may generate sufficient preliminary data to enable the investigator to prepare a proposal for future research.

The $20 million DOD Lung Cancer Research Program was established last year in the FY’09 Department of Defense Appropriation bill to fund research focused on the development of integrated components to identify, treat and manage early, curable lung cancer and better the health and welfare of our military, who are at greater risk for lung cancer, and the American public.

“Our goal from day one was to secure new and independent pipelines to fund necessary lung cancer research at the federal and state level,” said Laurie Fenton-Ambrose, LCA President & CEO. “We remain committed to not just increasing the depth and breath of these pipelines but to ensuring that lung cancer is addressed compassionately and comprehensively.”

To learn more about the DOD Lung Cancer Research Program “Concept Award,” including the intent of the award mechanism, eligibility, submission deadlines, application instructions, and general information go to Grants.gov and CDMRP websites (http://grants.gov/ and http://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/lcrp.htm respectively).

Lung Cancer Alliance (www.LungCancerAlliance.org) is the only national non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to patient support and advocacy for those living with or at risk for lung cancer. Lung Cancer Alliance is committed to leading the movement to reverse decades of stigma and neglect by empowering those with or at risk for the disease, elevating awareness and changing health policy.
