While known to many consumers as an alternative to dairy and a source of protein for vegetarians, soy products are now going mainstream and popping up everywhere. According to the DHA/EPA Omega-3 Institute, a depletion of DHA in the brain caused by insufficient intake has resulted in impaired learning ability.
Another cause for the popularity of soy products is the increased prevalence of food allergies. Lactose (intolerance of a sugar found in milk), dairy allergies and Celiac disease (the inability to process wheat gluten) have become more widely publicized. Soy products offer a great alternative to products containing lactose, dairy, or wheat. Most soy products are lactose and gluten free, making soy ice cream or pudding a great dessert that tastes great, but won’t make you sick. However, reading the label on foods is still very important to avoid a possible allergic reaction.
The nutrition and health benefits of soy products can not be denied. By promoting proper brain and eye function in children and reducing the risk of heart disease in adults, consuming more soy should be on everyone’s to-do list.
