(HealthNewsDigest.com)-Acetaminophen, an active ingredient found in many pain relievers, is safe and effective when taken as directed.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), you should never use more than directed by the medicine label or your doctor. Using more than directed, using more than one medicine containing acetaminophen at a time, or having 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day when using acetaminophen can cause serious liver damage.
Acetaminophen is in many over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medicines used to help relieve pain and fever. It’s also found in combination with other active ingredients in medicines that treat conditions such as symptoms of cold and flu.
Prescription medicines containing acetaminophen are often labeled with the abbreviation, “APAP.” It is important to be aware when your prescription contains acetaminophen so that you do not combine its use with other acetaminophen-containing medicines.
Talk to your doctor before using acetaminophen if you have liver disease or are taking the blood-thinning drug warfarin. Under these conditions, taking acetaminophen can put you at greater risk of harmful side effects.
