(HealthNewsDigest.com)-As part of 4-H National Youth Science Day™ millions of young people around the nation will simultaneously create biofuel. For this second annual event, the National Science Experiment will feature Biofuel Blast, a live hands-on science demonstration to teach youth about alternative energies and showcase how the use of these energies can benefit their communities.
In addition to youth and adults involved in 4-H programming, school teachers, after-school programs, camps, parents and other youth mentors are free to download 4-H National Youth Science Day program materials for use on October 7, and for future use beyond Science Day.
4-H National Youth Science Day was created as part of 4-H’s One Million New Scientists, One Million New Ideas™ campaign. It is designed to spark an early youth interest in science education in order to combat a national shortage of young people pursuing science in college and future careers. Participants in this year’s experiment will lead discussions about what they’ve learned, most notably how plants- such as corn, switchgrass, sorghum and algae-can create fuel and then power many everyday items.
“It’s vital for young people to understand, gain exposure to and to develop a passion for the sciences,” said Donald T. Floyd, Jr., National 4-H Council president and CEO. “4-H National Youth Science Day makes science fun, real and accessible. Kids will learn about cutting-edge technologies and then take the next step to lead by applying what they’ve learned and teaching others in their very own communities.”
According to a longitudinal study by Tufts University, youth who participate in 4-H programs are more likely to get better grades in school, to seek out science classes, to see themselves going to college and to contribute positively in their communities. In addition, 4-H youth have been shown to better resist peer pressure and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. Currently, more than 5 million youth across the nation take part in 4-H science, engineering and technology year-long programming.
This year’s national science experiment-Biofuel Blast-was developed in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension and Wisconsin 4-H with generous sponsor support provided by John Deere and DuPont.
