(HealthNewsDigest.com) – WASHINGTON DC; – A major development in raising awareness and helping parents with children afflicted with hemangioma has been created by a senate resolution designating first of November each year as National Hemangioma Day. This is the first time that hemangioma and other vascular anomalies which afflict more than 400,000 children each year is being addressed at the national level.

The resolution was proposed by Senator Lyndsey Graham and was approved by the United States Senate. Senator Graham wrote the resolution with input and guidance from Dr.Marcelo Hochman, Medical Director of The Hemangioma Treatment Foundation, and the Hemangioma International Treatment Center in Charleston, South Carolina, the nation’s leading center for hemangioma treatment and research.

Dr.Marcelo Hochman, said, “Thanks to Senator Graham’s resolution we can now ensure that every November 1 and the month following, we will have the opportunity to create greater public awareness of hemangiomas, and what can be done to treat them. We will implement new fund raising initiatives to allow us to help more children, and to fund research into this condition that may one day make it obsolete.”

Hemangiomas are birthmarks and vascular anomalies that can cause great emotional distress to both children and parents, and a negative impact on the emotional development of a child. Recent research has shown an increase in the number of hemangiomas being reported, particularly with low birth weight babies.

The Hemangioma Treatment Foundation has successfully treated children from the United States, and from other countries including Brazil, Turkey, China, Dubai, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Philippines. A recent case involved the treatment of a severely disfigured orphan from China, aged three, who had been listed as unsuitable for adoption. After successful surgery by Dr. Hochman, she is leading a normal life and has been adopted by American parents.
