Encourages Action on Medicine Cabinet Safety

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – MADISON, N.J., Oct. 4 — Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, maker of Advil® pain-relief products, announced today the launch of a consumer campaign encouraging Americans to clean out their medicine cabinets and properly dispose of unwanted, expired and recalled products. A recent poll shows that nearly half of Americans do not always look at the expiration date on over-the-counter medications before taking them.(1)
To help consumers replenish their medicine cabinets with a trusted and effective over-the-counter pain reliever, Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) is providing a coupon for a free bottle of Advil® to the first 500,000 eligible people who register. Pfizer is also partnering with Suzy Cohen, RPh, author of “The 24-Hour Pharmacist” to offer essential tips on medicine cabinet safety.
“This campaign encourages people to take a few simple steps to help ensure the safety of everyone in their household. We all need to de-clutter and clean out our medicine cabinets,” says Dr. Cohen. Below are five important medicine cabinet safety tips:
1. Clean out regularly: Make sure you schedule a medicine cabinet cleanout
every six months.
2. Check expiration dates: Check the expiration dates of all of the products
in your medicine cabinet. Don’t forget about makeup and sunscreen – they
can expire, too!
3. Check for recalled products: Check the FDA website by visiting
www.fda.gov or call the FDA at 888-463-6332 to learn about recalled
products and find out if you have any in your medicine cabinet.
4. Store properly: Keep products in your medicine cabinet stored in a secure
area with controlled room temperature and out of the reach of children.
5. Dispose properly: When disposing of unwanted, expired or recalled
products in your medicine cabinet, take precautions to ensure that you
protect children, pets and the environment from potentially negative
effects. Do not pour any medicines down a sink, toilet or storm drain.
