(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The holiday season begins this week: time to gather with family and friends, celebrate and share memories! However this is also the time of year when people spread germs along with good times and when overdoing it can lead to a less than cheerful feeling. Kerr Drug, a nationally recognized provider of pharmacy and other healthcare related services, reminds everyone their health needs don’t go away with the spirit of the season.
“During the holidays, everyone is busy and our health needs seem to be put on hold. We are not always eating well or getting enough sleep, and everyone is exposed to more germs through holiday parties and shopping,” says Anthony “Tony” Civello, CEO of Kerr Drug. “By following some common sense, easy health tips, you can ensure your holidays will be healthier and happier.”
*
Wash hands often to keep yourself from spreading germs and getting sick.
*
No matter how bad you want to attend a holiday party or event, if you are sick with a fever, stay home until the fever breaks to prevent getting others sick.
*
Prepare food safely. Remember these simple steps: wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperatures, and refrigerate promptly.
*
Get your flu shot.
*
Place a priority on sleep. Everything from dinner parties to shopping is more manageable when you are rested. Adults require seven to nine hours of rest to function optimally. Plan to wind down 30 minutes before going to bed. You’ll fall asleep soon and sleep more soundly.
*
Get moving. As the days get shorter, weather gets colder and holiday food lingers, look for some way to stay active. Take a walk. Even active-play video games can get you off the couch and moving with the whole family.
“It’s easy to forget putting yourself near the top of the holiday “to do” list but, it’s important if you want to enjoy a healthy and happy holiday season,” adds Civello.
