(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Erie, PA – The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy has received a full, six-year accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). This is the maximum recognition that a pharmacy school can receive and shows that it has met established qualifications and educational standards through initial and subsequent periodic evaluations.
Regarding LECOM receiving the full six year accreditation designation, Jeffrey W. Wadelin, Ph.D., ACPE Associate Executive Director and Director stated, “I think you should all feel very good about this outcome . . . this is as good as it gets.”
LECOM completed the accreditation process this past fall when a team of ACPE inspectors visited the Erie and Bradenton campuses to evaluate the school of pharmacy programs. The School of Pharmacy prepared for the accreditation visit with the self study process led by Associate Dean for Faculty, Naushad Ghilzai, Pharm. D. and former Professor Heather Petrelli, Pharm. D.
Hershey S. Bell, M.D., Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean, School of Pharmacy, applauded the work of everyone involved in achieving accreditation. “This feat could not have been accomplished without the dedicated collaborative efforts of the Erie and Bradenton School of Pharmacy’s faculty, students and staff, as well as many members of the administration of LECOM,” Dr. Bell said. “ Not only does this effort reflect our shared commitment to excellence in pharmacy education, we can be proud of working together toward demonstrating the highest standards of pharmacy education.”
Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) is the national agency for the accreditation of professional degree programs in pharmacy and providers of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE was established in 1932 for the accreditation of pre-service education, and in 1975, its scope of activity was broadened to include accreditation of providers of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE is the sole accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit professional degree programs in pharmacy.
The Council is an autonomous and independent agency whose Board of Directors is derived through the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) (three appointments each), and the American Council on Education (ACE) (one appointment).
