(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The most widely used lip fillers in U.S. are the hyaluronic acids – Juvederm-XC (www.juvederm.com), Restylane-L or Perlane-L (www.restylaneusa.com), and Prevelle Silk (www.prevelle.com). They can be reversed if you are not happy and last up to a year, depending on how much you have done. These products also contain lidocaine, which helps take the sting away because the lip area can hurt a bit. Fillers are the treatment of choice for lip plumping, but Botox and Dysport also play a role in restoring youthful looking lips. Botox® will help the muscles relax and hide your gums when you smile broadly. Although most women start with enhancing their upper lip, the lower lip may benefit from some filler too. It also serves to balance out your lips to make the overall appearance less obviously injected.
Every injector has his or her preferred products and signature techniques which can vary widely. These seemingly small nuances can actually make the biggest difference in the end result, and that is where experience and a good aesthetic eye come into play. We talked to four top female dermatologists who are true lip aficionados about their personal secrets for creating gorgeous, natural looking lips with FDA approved dermal fillers.
According to Chicago Dermatologist Dr Brooke Jackson, “A beautiful smile can light up a room, just as an unintended frown can turn people away from you. As we have birthdays, the corners of the lips tend to turn downward, which can leave you looking sad or mad at rest. It is very subtle correction but much appreciated. I like to use Restylane and it doesn’t take much to define the angle of the mouth which makes the downturned mouth at rest become more horizontal.”
New York City Dermatologist Dr Heidi Waldorf also prefers to stick with hyaluronic acids in the lips themselves. “I avoid duck lips by limiting fill on the edges. For young women without lipstick creep lines who want a fuller pout, I stick to the ‘pillows’ of the upper and lower lip. I can get a lovely natural curving upward with this technique. For the woman whose primary complaint is lines around the mouth, I use a tiny thread of filler in the vermillion or white border of the lip to spread out the accordion pleats. If the lines themselves are deep enough, they can be filled also in some cases. For the woman who doesn’t want a bigger lip but wants to fix a permanent frown, I can turn her frown upside down by injecting above and below the sides creating struts toward and into the cheeks to show off more of the lip she has without increasing its size.”
Dr Jeannette Graf, a Dermatologist in Great Neck, New York also stresses going for a natural look. “I feel strongly that in order to create a beautiful full lip, it is essential to maintain the unique lip shape that everyone has. This also creates a natural looking lip by keeping the natural symmetry that each person has that defines their look. I use only hyaluronic acid injections in the lip; Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane. I inject along the vermillion border of the lip accentuating the philtrum columns and Cupid ’s bow to enhance the shape. Next I enhance the fullness of the lip by augmenting the inside or meat of the lip to create a pout.”
When it comes to creating lovely lips, size as well as shape counts. As Dr Graf explains, “It is essential that the lip maintains its proportionality so that the appearance of the face is unchanged – only enhanced. Whereas I used to inject the “meat” of the lip directly into the lip, recently I have found that injecting from outside of the vermillion border into the lip is much more tolerable with less bruising and yields excellent cosmetic results.”
New York City and New Haven, Connecticut Dermatologist Dr Lisa Donofrio shares her tips on how to avoid the dreaded trout pout or duck lip; “ I like to make sure the area around the lips is supported and full before filling the lip itself. This avoids that “ducky” lipped look. I call my technique “airbrushing;” I use a long thin needle to fill from the upper nasolabial fold across to the philtrum (the little cleft that extends from the nose to the upper lip). This everts the upper lip more than it makes it stick out. If there are any lip lines I like to fill them from underneath so the border is “threaded” and it is sharp and demarcated. I use the same technique for the lower lip.”
Lastly, avoid aspirin products, blood thinners or vitamin E for one to two weeks before having your lips treated to prevent bruising. Ice packs before and after also help with discomfort and swelling. In most cases, you can cover up any residual needle marks with concealer and lipstick, and go back to work the same day.
