(HealthNewsDigest.com) – SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 15, 2011 — A trade association has been formed for the nearly 250,000 taxi and limo drivers in the United States, offering its members a much needed opportunity to receive health benefits at affordable group rates. Drivers will also have access to discounted health and lifestyle benefits such as dental, vision and chiropractic care as well as a prescription drug program and discounted legal representation.
The National Association of Taxi Drivers (NATD) has been created to address the ongoing needs of America’s often overlooked group of independent contractors. It is the only trade association of its kind with a national focus. Several groups have formed in various cities over the years, but their focus has been on drivers’ rights. The NATD is not a union or advocacy group, but a source of information and products to improve drivers’ quality of life, to collaborate through a members-only forum, and stay informed through timely articles and current news.
Founded by insurance, financial and transportation professionals, the NATD has in place the staff, resources and experience needed to ensure its success. Gary McCarron, Director of Benefits, has over 30 years experience in health and employee benefits. “I am excited about this opportunity to utilize my contacts and expertise to create products that offer drivers the greatest benefits for the least cost,” says McCarron. “The NATD plans to add several new benefits to its lineup in the weeks to come, including a comprehensive group plan similar to those offered by major corporations.”
NATD’s president, Dan Spain, has an ongoing association with the transportation industry and is a former vice president of a major Wall Street firm. Mr. Spain understands the business of driving – the long hours, low pay and lack of benefits. “We will be reaching out to the nation’s taxi and limo companies in the months to come in hopes they embrace the benefits of the association. We see this as an opportunity for them to offer their drivers an avenue to benefits they have not been able to provide,” Spain said.
All benefits offered through the NATD do not discriminate because of a member’s health history. Pre-existing conditions will always be covered and the waiting period for the optional health insurance is only 21 to 52 days, depending on the member’s enrollment date.
