(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Philadelphia, PA —Feelings of unforgiveness which can lead to anger, ire, and resentment can literally make us hot under the collar. But researcher and author Dr. Michael Barry says cooling the flames of these feelings that boil within us can help start the healing process for those struggling with illnesses—even cancer.

Barry has spent years studying the disease of unforgiveness , or holding onto negative feelings and emotions such as hatred, anger and bitterness. These feelings and emotional stressors can impact every organ of our bodies. In his new book, The Forgiveness Project: The Startling Discovery of How to Overcome Cancer, Find Health, and Achieve Peace, Barry writes about his research into how unforgiveness is a disease and an emotional disorder that can be prevented, treated and cured.

“My book is written for anyone struggling with unforgiveness. However, those who engage in the program and succeed most often are those who refuse to allow their lives to be destroyed by anger, hatred or revenge—the fire within,” Barry discusses in Chapter 1: Cooling the Fire Within. “It’s for anyone who chooses to run the narrow road reserved for the elite—those who strive to be the best they can be. … It encompasses the best of what it means to be healthy and fully alive; the best of what it means to be a human being.”

Barry made a significant discovery through his medical, theological and sociological research, as well as clinical experience at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). The immune system and forgiveness are very much connected . Through the inspiring stories of five cancer patients, Barry helps readers identify—and overcome—the barriers that prevent healing and peace.

Besides serving as the title of Barry’s book, The Forgiveness Project is also a triple-faceted program that spends time learning about Barry’s research; completing “homework assignments” that explore personal feelings of unforgiveness toward oneself, others or even God; and finally, talking with staff members about the patient’s experience into exploring these emotions. Barry finds that the people who complete the program are able to put out the fire of their unforgiveness and negative emotions and begin the journey to a true healing process.

Emotional stress, many times caused by unforgiveness, causes high levels of cortisol and adrenaline in the body, which cause wear and tear on the heart and cardiovascular system. And anger might not be the only culprit. High levels of anxiety and depression may contribute to health problems as well. Those who are angry much of the time tend to have other chronic negative emotions as well.

Barry is Director of Pastoral Care at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America , where he specializes in the connection between spirituality and health. He has served in ministry for more than 20 years and has appeared on numerous radio and television shows around the country. He is the author of A Reason for Hope, A Season for Hope and The Art of Caregiving.
