(HealthNewsDigest.com) – ‘Tis still the season to Kill a Germ with cold and flu season in full swing (Well, I should say germs!), . Of course, these days, we’re concerned with killing all sorts of germs. How often do we shake someone’s hand, pay for something, touch something many others have touched and then touched our face? How often during the course of one day do we touch our face after touching something? Do we usually wash our hands afterward? Do we always wash our hands before eating like we tell our children to do? While we don’t want to become obsessive, washing our hands often, really is a good idea.
Washing our hands before touching our face is one of the most single important things we can do to prevent getting a cold or flu. and even possibly a food contamination type illness. However, touching our face is the type of behavior that is so automatic, we may not even be aware all the time that we’re doing it. So, awareness is key, before we can stop or at least stop before we wash our hands.
Here are a few other ways to Kill a Germ. Let’s
* Not use hot air blowers in bathrooms to dry hands (they spread germs).
* Not put dishes away until completely dry (germs grow more easily under moist conditions).
* Do use paper towels in the kitchen to wipe hands and counters as much as possible rather than a dish towel.
* Do allow kitchen sponges to dry thoroughly, and either microwave or wash them in the dishwasher often.
* Do observe food handlers handling our food (have you ever seen the deli guy cut your turkey with a glove only to handle money afterward?I have!).
* Not lend our cell phone to someone who has a cold, unless we can clean it afterward.
Many times I am asked, which method of cleaning our hands is most effective, soap, alcohol sanitizer, or a combo? Research has shown that washing our hands with soap for 20-30 seconds is effective without a sanitizer. Sanitizers, which can cause skin dryness since they need frequent applications, because the alcohol evaporates quickly, leaving us unprotected. A concern of course is that we can’t always have access to soap and water, so many of us are carrying around these sanitizers. Well, I’ve just learned about a new product on the market called Veripur, a hand sanitizer that combines a long lasting antimicrobal with a moisturizer! It is an alcohol -free moisturizing hand lotion that kills the most common bacteria that we are aiming to kill by washing our hands, and it has been shown to kill germs up to 4 hours later by leaving the moisturizing anti-bacteria film behind! I’ve been using it since I received a sample, and I must say that it is now part of my daily morning routine before I leave the house (Look for it at your local Walgreens)!
Here’s to minimizing our exposure and continuing to have a healthy winter season and beyond!
