Alice Hamilton a Leading Expert in the Developing Field of Occupational Health (born today in 1869)

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Profile America — Sunday, February 27th. Today marks the birthday of a remarkable woman doctor — Alice Hamilton, born in 1869. She was the first woman appointed to the faculty of Harvard University, where she taught for many years. At the same time she became a leading expert in the developing field of occupational health. Hamilton was a pioneer in the field of toxicology, studying job site illnesses and the dangerous effects of industrial metals and chemical compounds on the human body. After receiving many honors, she died at the age of 101. In the U.S., there are 170,000 medical scientists, more than half of them women.
