(HealthNewsDigest.com) – WHITEHOUSE STATION, NJ, – Merck Consumer Care, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., the makers of COPPERTONE®, launched its 2011 suncare innovations featuring new foaming lotion sunscreens. Oil Free Foaming Sunscreen Lotion SPF 75+ and Water BABIES® Sunscreen Foaming Lotion SPF 75+ offer strong protection against the sun’s rays in weightless formulas.

“My patients are constantly asking about lightweight suncare products that will help protect their skin from the sun without irritating it,” said Dr. David J. Leffell, Professor of Dermatology and Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine and consultant for the COPPERTONE® brand. “The most effective formulas are those that help consumers make sun protection convenient – sunscreen can be soft and gentle to the skin while providing powerful, broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays.”

The scientists at the COPPERTONE® Solar Research Center developed a unique delivery system, resulting in the only mass-market foaming lotions in the suncare category. The light, moisture-rich foams absorb quickly, and offer waterproof sun protection that helps prevent premature skin aging from the sun.

Water BABIES® and Oil Free products,” said Patricia Agin, Ph.D., Fellow in Skincare Research and Development at the Solar Research Center. “We continuously innovate to meet consumers’ evolving needs for gentle protection in easy-to-use formulas.”

The additions to the 2011 line are a result of a long history of incorporating feedback from dermatologists and consumers. The COPPERTONE® line continues to offer a wide array of sunscreens SPF 15 and above that help protect consumers from the most damaging rays across 100% of the UVA and UVB spectrum (amount of protection varies across the spectrum).

New in COPPERTONE® Oil Free:

COPPERTONE® Oil Free Foaming Sunscreen Lotion SPF 75+ offers broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays in a light-as-air form for everyday use to help keep skin looking healthy and beautiful. The hypoallergenic formula comes in a silky-soft application that is fragrance-free and won’t clog pores.

Twenty years after the makers of COPPERTONE® created the sport category and launched its iconic high performance sunscreens, the brand’s leadership continues with an extension of its market-leading line – COPPERTONE SPORT® High Performance Sunscreen Lotion SPF 100+. This waterproof sunscreen is specially formulated for active adults and is ultra sweatproof so it won’t run into eyes and sting. It also contains antioxidants for extreme conditions. Extreme conditions that trigger sweating (heat, humidity, vigorous exercise) can make skin more vulnerable to UV damage. Added antioxidants help replenish skin’s natural defenses.

As the No. 1 pediatrician-recommended brand, we expanded our Water BABIES® product line with new products, including:

* COPPERTONE® Water BABIES® Sunscreen Foaming Lotion SPF 75+ is soft and gentle for babies’ skin. It is non-irritating and offers broad spectrum, waterproof sun protection.

COPPERTONE® Tanning Lotion SPF 15 is a non-greasy formula offering broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection with the classic COPPERTONE® fragrance. It is formulated with Aloe and Vitamin E and provides a moisturizing and fast-absorbing lotion.

COPPERTONE is a registered trademark of Schering-Plough HealthCare Products, Inc., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc.
