(HealthNewsDigest.com) – ST. PETE BEACH, FL May 3, 2011 – The recent death of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is causing travelers to question the benefits of their travel insurance policy. It’s important for travelers to understand whether their travel insurance adequately protects them in the event of terrorism, warns Squaremouth.com, a site for comparing and purchasing travel insurance.
On May 1, 2011, the State Department warned, “U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations.”
Travelers should be aware of the differences in terrorism coverage between policies. Some travel insurance policies require a terrorist attack to take place within 30 days of departure, while other policies require an attack to take place within 7-10 days of departure. Squaremouth suggests searching for policies with the 30 day time-frame, since they allow travelers more time to cancel in the event of a terrorist attack. For example, if an attack happens 15 days prior to a traveler departing, a policy with a 30 day time-frame would provide cancellation coverage, however, a policy with a 7-10 day time-frame, would not. Travel insurance providers offering the 30 day time-frame are: Travelex Insurance Services, Global Alert, Seven Corners, Travel Guard, MH Ross, Travel Safe, Travel Insurance Services and Travel Insured International.
Trip Interruption coverage will also be better with the 30 day terrorism time-frame benefit. The following policies have a 7-10 day limitation: CSA Travel Protection and HTH Worldwide.
One of the most important points to remember is cancellation coverage will not be available to travelers who cancel or cut short a trip out of fear of a terrorist attack. In this situation, the only coverage available is a benefit called Cancel for Any Reason. Cancel for Any Reason coverage is a catch-all benefit that, if purchased within 14 to 30 days of an initial deposit payment, allows a customer to cancel a trip without explanation and receive a refund up to 75 percent of the trip cost.
