The following statement was released today by Chip Kahn, President and CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals.

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – The Federation of American Hospitals strongly supports the Long-Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Improvement Act (S. 1486). This important legislation will help patients by ensuring access to vital long-term care hospital clinical services, including immediate access to physicians and nurses, as well as “24/7” access to respiratory therapy, advanced cardiac life support, and complex wound care services.
The Long-Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Improvement Act also would facilitate LTCH certification by establishing comprehensive and well-defined patient and facility classification criteria. These criteria are essential because they would ensure that LTCHs treat patients with the highest acuity and complexity and replace existing arbitrary and unreasonable regulatory policies which hamper access to care.
The Long-Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Improvement Act is much-needed legislation that will benefit patients and LTCHs alike. We commend its sponsors – Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) – for their leadership, and look forward to working with them and other Members of Congress to have it signed into law.
