(HealthNewsDigest.com) – If you’re a man there is a good chance you could have prostate health issues at some point in your life. Thanks to a simple physical exam and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, most prostate cancers can be detected before there are symptoms. If you do get prostate disease you can harness the power of potent natural medicines to strengthen your body’s own ability to heal. Statistics show:
· The incidence of BPH (enlarged prostate) is at least 50 percent for all men 50 and older.
· One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
· Prostate cancer is the 3rd most common cause of death from cancer in men.
At the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia University Medical Center we are conducting clinical trials and compiling the scientific research on safe and effective holistic therapies for prostate conditions to be integrated with mainstream medical practices, which can include watchful waiting, pharmaceutical drugs, surgery, and radiation therapy. These two kinds of medicine added together offer much more than either one alone. http://www.holisticurology.columbia.edu/home.html
But why wait for a negative diagnosis? Here are steps you can take to improve your prostate health, today.
Improve Your Diet
Cut the fat.
Numerous studies suggest a direct correlation between dietary fat intake and prostate cancer incidence. Eat less than 30 percent fat overall and favor unsaturated fats such as olive and canola oils over saturated and trans fats.
Improve omega-3 to omega-6 fat ratio.
Both are unsaturated, but omega-3 fats (salmon, cod, sardines, flax seeds) appear to protect the prostate, while the omega-6 fats (corn & soybean oils, oils in processed foods) may have a disease-promoting effect.
Go organic.
Avoid environmental contaminants by eating a largely organic and vegetarian diet.
Up your fiber.
Eat one big green salad every day. Breakfast on steel-cut or slow-cooked oats. Switch to whole grains.
Eat more antioxidants.
Include lots of antioxidant–rich foods that protect cells against free radicals: leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, deeply colored fruits.
Use Natural Supplements supported by scientific research
· AHCC – Active Hexose Correlated Compound
Supported by 30 PubMed-listed studies, AHCC has been clinically shown to boost the activity of natural killer cells that are responsible for identifying and killing abnormal cells and tumors. Derived from the mycelia of hybridized shitake mushrooms, AHCC is used in hundreds of cancer clinics internationally and at some major integrative centers such as the Columbia University Center for Holistic Urology.
Vitamin D
Insufficient vitamin D is associated with developing numerous cancers, including prostate. One study found that men with above-average vitamin D levels have a 45 percent lower risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer than those with lower levels; another that men who already have prostate cancer dramatically increase their chances of survival if they have adequate levels.
· Lycopene
Taking lycopene supplements has been found to slow the growth of tumors in men with prostate cancer. An association has been found between high dietary lycopene consumption and low risk of prostate cancer.
· Saw Palmetto
This natural plant extract has been shown to improve urinary flow rate and decrease residual urine volume; it works in a manner similar to the drug finasteride, inhibiting the enzyme responsible for the formation of the hormone metabolite dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that may encourage the growth of prostate cells, and preventing uptake of DHT.
· GCP – Genistein Combined Polysaccharide
Research suggests that GCP helps fight prostate cancer by reducing blood flow to the tumor (anti-angiogenesis) and by enhancing programmed cell death of cancer cells (apoptosis).
Make Lifestyle Changes
Reduce stress.
Stress amplifies the production of free radicals, hampers the function of the immune system, and has been linked with premature aging.
Laugh out loud.
Several studies have shown that laughter can decrease stress and has other positive effects. One study showed that just anticipating mirthful laughter lowered stress hormones.
Exercise regularly.
Moderate exercise increases the body’s production of antioxidants, mildly boosts immune function, and leaves you feeling refreshed and energetic.
Detoxify.
We are exposed to hundreds of potentially toxic manmade chemicals each day in homes and offices. Replace conventional cleaning products with non-toxic alternatives.
