(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Cataracts affect more than 22 million people in the U.S. and are the leading cause of blindness among the country’s older adults. By age 65, about half of the population has cataracts.

A cataract forms when the lens of the eye becomes clouded and blocks the passage of light to the retina. The result is distorted and blurry vision, or faded colors.
Cataract surgery can offer improved vision, and is one of the safest and most effective procedures, with a 95 percent success rate.

Dr. Preston Blomquist, associate professor of ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, cites the following signposts for considering surgery:
· when driving, there is too much glare from the sun or headlights;
· when you cannot see well enough to read, watch television, sew or play games;
· when you are afraid of bumping into objects or falling; or
· when your vision is not improved sufficiently by wearing glasses.
