American Society of Plastic Surgeons Releases Study Finding Reduced Health Risks after Cosmetic Surgery Procedure
(HealthNewsDigest.com) – New York, NY — A study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in September found that liposuction may not only have cosmetic benefits, but also facilitate health benefits as well. “The study found that patients who had liposuction experienced a significant reduction in triglyceride levels and white blood cell counts,” said Dr. Adam Schaffner, Director of JUVA® Plastic Surgery in New York City.
This study concluded that not only can liposuction effectively remove fat, but also provide at-risk patients with opportunities for healthier hearts. “In addition to improving the patient’s appearance, liposuction can also help lower triglyceride levels and thus reduce a patient’s risk of developing heart disease, diabetes or stroke,” said Dr. Schaffner.
The study measured triglyceride and cholesterol levels in over 300 patients, both men and women, undergoing liposuction. Triglyceride levels in patients with normal levels prior to the procedure were unchanged. However, those patients with higher, at-risk levels experienced an average 43 percent reduction after surgery — about twice the effect achieved with a drug commonly prescribed to reduce triglyceride levels.
The study also found that white blood cell counts decreased about 11 percent after liposuction. High white blood cell counts are associated with a raised level of inflammation within the body and have been linked to coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes.
