(HealthNewsDigest.com) – CHICAGO – February 27, 2012 – As millions of baby boomers turn 65, physicians will face increased demands from our aging population. The American Medical Association (AMA) has released a new publication entitled “Geriatric Care by Design” to help physicians care for their older patients.

“All physicians must be prepared to meet and treat the unique needs of our older patients,” said AMA President Peter W. Carmel, M.D. “This new resource will help physicians successfully tailor their practices so they can provide superior individualized care to their geriatric patients.”

“Geriatric Care by Design” features easy-to-implement ideas and templates to help physicians make both large and small changes in their practices. It is designed to aid physicians in meeting the needs of older patients and those with complex chronic diseases in the areas of practice and patient room design, staffing and human resources, coordination of care, patient education and health literacy.

The guide is available as an e-book or in hard copy. It is designed to fit the lives of busy physicians with bullet points, easy-to-use checklists, tables and links to resources for additional information. AMA members can purchase the book or e-book at a discounted price. For more information on Geriatric Care by Design, visit www.ama-assn.org/go/geriatriccare.
