(HealthNewsDigest.com) – CHICAGO- In celebration of National Agriculture Day on March 8, 2012, the Institute of Food Technologists is featuring two informational videos on IFT Food Facts to help consumers shop smarter whether it’s in the grocery store produce aisle or the local farmer’s market. National Agriculture Day is a day to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture. Producers, agricultural associations, corporations, universities, government agencies and countless others across the United States join together on this day to recognize the contributions of agriculture.
One of the videos featured on IFT’s Food Facts, “Food Safety in the Produce Aisle” shares tips about how to make safe choices when shopping for produce. When it comes to buying produce from your local grocery store, it’s all about temperature. Cold temperatures prevent or slow the growth of most microorganisms and will help your foods last longer. It is important to store safely such as storing it in a bag in a clean refrigerator set at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Check out the video to learn more.
Another video on IFT’s Food Facts, “Smart Tips for Shopping at Farmer’s Markets” outlines what you need to know when you purchase produce from a farmer’s market. While most fruits and vegetables need little more than a rinse under a cold faucet, some types of produce require a little more attention. No matter where produce was grown, always wash it thoroughly before serving or eating. All produce is subject to dirt, dust and other pathogens. Buying local doesn’t eliminate opportunities for contamination, which is why it’s good to get to know your local farmers. Pay attention to when your favorite fruits and vegetables are in season, that way you can eat local foods when they are at their peak taste, most abundant, and least expensive. Check out the video to learn more. In addition to the featured agricultural videos, IFT Food Facts is a great resource where consumers can find out more information about foods they eat every day.
