(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Your lips can take a beating when the sun shines. Extreme temperatures, sun and wind exposure can cause lips to suffer and shrivel, and cause premature aging in the form of smoker’s lines. Easy relief is on the way in the form of moisturizing lip protection that is portable and does double duty to make lips feel good and look soft and sexy.

POUT PROTECTION – Lips are extremely susceptible to sunburn because they don’t have melanin, which can help protect skin from UV rays. High SPF is important as lips are also at risk for skin cancer. Apply a sun-protective lip product daily and carry it with you to reapply throughout the day. Try SoftLips Seasonal Flavors with SPF20 like Watermelon or Sugar Cookie, or look for the variety 5-Pack.(www.softlips.com)

HYDRATE 24/7 – Look for emollients like beeswax, shea butter, glycerin, vitamin E, almond, jojoba or coconut oils. The Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm from Clinique (www.clinique.com) is a super-nourishing tinted lip balm that offers intense moisture and a hint of shine in a variety of pretty and wearable shades.

MEDICATED BALMS – If you have sensitive skin, avoid overdoing camphor-based medicated lip balms, which can be irritating. Blisstex Medicated Lip Balm with SPF 15 (www.drugstore.com) protection helps prevent dryness and chapping while soothing irritated lips. Blisstex also does Medicated Berry and Medicated Mint lip balms and a Medicated Lip Ointment for lips in need of major repair.

DEAD SKIN SLOUGH- Lip exfoliators slough off dead surface skin cells. Use once weekly to keep lips smooth and soft. The Jane Iredale Sugar and Butter Lip Exfoliator and Plumper (www.janeiredale.com) uses organic brown sugar to gently remove dull, dry skin. The tinted lip plumper increases hydration and promotes collagen production.

PUT MATTE ON HOLD – Some matte lipsticks can be drying to your lips, so avoid using them when your lips are chapped. Opaque lipsticks offer more coverage and protection than sheer glosses generally. Josie Maran’s Argan Slimline Lipstick Plus Gloss (www.sephora.com) is a long-lasting, double-ended lip color pen. The lipstick hydrates with the creamy, moisturizing coverage of a lipstick, and Argan oil-infused gloss completes the look.

STOP THE LICKING – Licking your lips damages the protective barrier because your saliva contains digestive enzymes that can break it down and dry your lips out. Apply a dab of lip balm before you sleep to keep lips moist and train yourself not to over lick. L’Occitane Moisturizing Organic Shea Lip Balm (www.usa.loccitane.com) hydrates lips with shea butter to nourish and protect lips all day long.

PEELING LIP PROBLEM – Lips that constantly peel could be the sign of an allergic reaction; a new lipstick, toothpaste, or medication could be the culprit. The powerhouse acne drug Isotretinoin can dry out the delicate skin of your lips. If your lips are red, irritated, or break out in a prickly rash, try a mild topical hydrocortisone cream, such as the PCA SKIN Après Peel Soothing Balm (www.pcaskin.com) with 1% hydrocortisone.

LOSE THE LIP LINES – Those fine feathered lines that cause lipstick bleed can be the result of sun exposure, aging, and smoking, as well as overactive muscles around the mouth. Look for age-reversing ingredients like retinol and peptides. Try Olay Regenerist Lip Anti-Aging Concentrate (www.olay.com) for lines on the lip and around the lip area and to help lips stay looking smoother and younger.
