I routinely consult with clients on how to choose a wardrobe for excursions that range from a weekend at thebeach, an out-of-town wedding or an impromptu trip to Las Vegas to a two-week soirée in Dubai. No matter where your travels take you, the most important thing to consider is comfort.
The whole idea of a vacation is to relax and de-stress. The last thing you want to do is worry about how you look or feel uncomfortable. I recommend choosing individual pieces—not entire outfits—that can be interchangeable and appropriate for multiple settings or events with a few accessories, a change of shoes or maybe adding a jacket.

To make packing easier and your trip more enjoyable:
· Choose fabrics with some element of stretch, such as ITY jersey, Ponte knit and cashmere, as they’re less likely to wrinkle.
· If you must travel with silk, chiffon, charmeuse or other wrinkle-prone fabrics, hang the item in a dry cleaning bag, and pack it just before you leave, placing it flat on the very top of your suitcase, and fold it back over itself if necessary. Then, immediately unpack the garment as soon as possible upon arrival.
· When packing, place shoes on the bottom, along with any other heavy items, and place the lightest items on top to keep everything from becoming smashed out of shape and wrinkled.
· To prevent the dreaded shampoo leak from ruining your entire wardrobe, place toiletries and other personal care items into travel-size bottles and seal them inside an oversize Ziploc bag. This way, if something does leak, the damage is contained within the bag. Ferrin also suggests using a suitcase that features a wet compartment, designed to keep toiletries or wet clothes separate from dry goods.
· When you arrive at the hotel, unpack. Placing your clothes in the closet and dresser drawers will not only keep your garments looking great but it will also make you feel more at home and prevent the suitcase explosion that takes place when you must root through to find what you want. It also makes packing to return home much easier.
· Bring along a garbage bag to store dirty clothes and isolate these from clean items on the return trip. This also makes laundry much easier upon returning home—everything that needs washed is together and ready for sorting.
