(HealthNewsDigest.com) – NEW YORK, May 14, 2012 — To celebrate National Women’s Health Week (May 13 to 19), Raising Women’s Voices for the Health Care We Need has launched an educational campaign about what women and our children are gaining through the new health care law.
“We’re calling it MamaCare, with good reason,” said Lois Uttley, co-founder of Raising Women’s Voices. “It’s giving Moms and our kids the health care we need.”
Cindy Pearson, another co-founder of Raising Women’s Voices, said the campaign is highlighting some of the key health care benefits and protections that mothers and their children are getting from the health care law (the Affordable Care Act):
— Security in knowing that our adult children can stay on our family
health insurance policies until age 26 and our policies can’t be
canceled if we get sick;
— Preventive care we need to stay healthy, like vaccinations for our
children and women’s health services we need throughout our lives, like
Pap smears, mammograms, Pap and osteoporosis screenings; and
— Protection against discriminatory health insurer practices, like not
letting insurance companies deny coverage to our children because of
pre-existing conditions. The law is also protecting the future of
Medicare, so it will be there for our grandmothers when they need it.
The idea for MamaCare came from one of Raising Women’s Voices’ regional coordinators, Sara Finger, who is Executive Director of the Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health and the mother of a young daughter. In an op-ed article she wrote for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel in April she said this:
Obamacare. Or, more aptly, Mamacare, Babycare or simply Healthcare. Despite all the name-calling, there’s much more to health care reform than the name. And when we push beyond the political brawls over health care, particularly women’s health care, and talk about the real benefits of the Affordable Care Act – the new protections against unfair insurance practices and new coverage for needed health services – women love it. Women need it. Women deserve it.”
Raising Women’s Voices has posted a new MamaCare information section on its Countdown to Coverage website, which is helping women learn about the benefits they already are receiving from the health care law, and the new women’s preventive services provision that goes into effect August 1.
The group will be encouraging women to use Twitter and Facebook to educate their mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, friends and co-workers about the health care law’s provisions. Women will be posting photographs of themselves and their children on the MamaCare page, contributing stories of how they have been helped by the health care law and signing a statement of support for MamaCare.
Raising Women’s Voices for the Health Care We Need is a national initiative working to ensure that implementation of the new health care law (the Affordable Care Act) meets the needs of women and families.
