New Jersey Plastic Surgeon Michael Rose, who functions as “a psychiatrist with a scalpel”, provides insight on the topic

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Shrewsbury, NJ — A new cosmetic psychological screening tool is to be unveiled at an international conference on July 3-4, 2012 in the United Kingdom. But Dr. Michael Rose of The Plastic Surgery Center in New Jersey claims qualified plastic surgeons should already be savvy to psychological analysis of prospective patients.
Findings from the first study to implement and evaluate a psychological screening tool for cosmetic surgery patients in routine private practice in the UK are to be reported at Appearance Matters 5, an international conference on July 3-4, 2012, organized by the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), UWE Bristol.
More people are seeking elective cosmetic surgery from unregulated private sector surgeons without a preliminary psychological assessment. Little is known about the impact that aesthetic surgery has on patients’ psychosocial functioning, adjustment and appearance satisfaction in the long term.
Researchers at CAR argue that there is an urgent need to pre-screen all patients prior to surgery to assess their expectations of the possible outcomes. Findings from the study to be presented at Appearance Matters 5, demonstrate the benefits of pre-screening as a mandatory component of cosmetic surgery assessment. The screening tool was developed by two researchers and based upon years of research and clinical experience.
According to Dr. Rose, “I think this psychological study and assessment is an interesting proposition, but probably not necessary if you seek out your surgery from a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. Part of the training that we undertake during accredited Plastic Surgery training focuses on how to evaluate a patient not only from a physical and medical point of view, but from a psychological one as well. This is simply missing from the unregulated training that many non-Board Certified plastic surgeons undertake in various weekend courses to learn “cosmetic procedures”. It underscores the importance of seeking out a Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Your emotional health is as important as your physical health! That being said, I cannot overemphasize the ability of a properly chosen and experienced cosmetic surgery to improve the emotional well-being of a cosmetic surgery patient. As the husband of a psychiatrist, my wife is often amazed at how much more I can do for a patient’s emotional health in an hour with a scalpel than she can do after years of therapy. It speaks to the power that these cosmetic procedures have on our well-being. The bottom line: the most important thing is they be done on the right person, for the right reasons and at the right time!”
