An unhealthy mouth impacts the rest of a pet’s body. Plaque, a sticky substance that builds up in the mouth, contains bacteria that can lead to periodontal disease, which can cause infections and inflammation in the heart valves, liver, kidneys and other organs. Periodontal disease can be prevented by yearly cleanings performed by veterinary professionals that are supplemented by effective in-home dental care.
Talk to your veterinarian for recommendations on how to ensure you’re maintaining your pet’s dental health at home in between professional cleanings. Some measures that may be suggested include teeth-brushing, dental chews, oral solutions and water additives.
