(HealthNewsDigest.com) – New York — Jun 04, 2014  — If you have ever had a migraine, you know they can be detrimental to your day. Migraine symptoms include a pounding headache, nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity. Chances are if you already have a migraine, the pain is so bad that you feel like lying down and giving up. Don’t give up! There are plenty of ways to prevent and treat migraines. Dr. Leon Reyfman from Pain Physicians NY provides a full range of advanced pain management services. Here are seven ways to treat migraines and what to do to prevent them from occurring:

1. Avoid Loud Noises and Bright Lights

Both loud noises and bright lights are common triggers for migraines. Avoiding lights and noises can be difficult, but things like driving at night, crowded venues and the glare from the sun are all stimuli that can cause migraines, and can be avoided to some degree.

2. Watch What you are Eating

Certain foods such as chocolate, red wine, processed meats, sweeteners and cheese can cause a migraine. Try to keep a log of when you get a headache or migraine to determine what foods could be causing your pain. Then, avoid or limit your intake of those foods.

3. Maintain Sleep Patterns

It is important that you maintain your sleep patterns and habits. Sleeping in late one day could cause a migraine, because it’s not what your body is used to.

4. Utilize Ice Packs

If you feel a migraine coming on or already have one, lie down in a dark room and put an ice pack on your head. Close your eyes and try to relax. This will help to reduce the pressure in your head.

5. Seek Medical Treatment

There are multiple procedures and treatment options for migraines including:

  • Injections
  • Medications
  • Physical Therapy
  • Chiropractic Treatment
