(HealthNewsDigest.com) – In general, testosterone levels reach a peak in men after puberty and then begin declining more rapidly by the age of 40. By the age of 30, testosterone levels start to decline by about 1% every year. While testosterone production never drops to zero the way estrogen does in women after menopause, it can drop low enough to cause symptoms of low T, which range from fatigue and depression to low libido, erectile dysfunction, weight gain, and lost muscle mass.

Low testosterone can happen at any age. While it is most common among older men, it can also happen to teenagers. Fortunately, low testosterone is easily treated with testosterone injections or cream. If you are dealing with the side effects of low T, it may be due to any number of causes, all of which can be treated.

Causes of Low T in Younger Men

There are several diseases that can cause low testosterone in men in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, including liver disease, kidney disease, COPD, type 2 diabetes, and a pituitary gland disorder. Some genetic conditions may also cause low testosterone, such as Prader-Willi syndrome, Myotonic dystrophy, Klinefelter syndrome, and hemochromatosis. Some medications are also known to interfere with testosterone production, particularly corticosteroids.

Men of any age can develop low T after steroid use or an injury that keeps the testes from producing enough testosterone. Chemotherapy, radiation, and HIV infection are also known to interfere with testosterone production.

The cause of low T may be considered primary hypogonadism (problem affecting the testes) or secondary hypogonadism (injury, developmental problem, or radiation).

Causes of Low T in Older Men

Testosterone levels naturally decline as men age, but some men experience a sharper decline than others. 19-39% of men are estimated to have testosterone levels that are low for their age.

Regardless of the cause or your age, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can be an effective solution. Hormone therapy restores normal hormone levels to treat the side effects of low T, including lost muscle mass, moodiness, low libido, fatigue, and memory problems.

If you believe you have low testosterone levels, schedule an appointment to have your hormone levels tested and learn more about the benefits of testosterone therapy.
