The Importance of Understanding The Signs of Addiction

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Whilst for many people drugs like alcohol and marijuana are a common part of their daily lives, and they do so with total control over their actions and habits, for some it’s not possible. The main difference is that whilst some of us can have a few beers or can partake in drugs without ever finding ourselves getting drawn in and addicted to the substance, others seek that feeling permanently.

Even those who believe they lead normal, happy lives could be living blind to the fact they are dealing with a constant battle against addiction.

A lack of education is one of the biggest reasons that some of us can wind up addicted to substances without ever actually realizing or doing anything about it. It’s hard to notice the fine line between enjoyment and dependency, and this can be a significant problem for someone who is battling an addiction.

You’ll find that cautionary warnings from friends and loved ones fall of deaf ears as you know that you are in control – but are you?

Here are just some of the most atypical signs of someone who is dealing with an addiction;

Needs The Hit

Drugs cause a release of dopamine within the brain, which is essentially the feeling of pleasure and enjoyment. This is a problem because for some, especially those with less fulfilling and frustrating lifestyles, that feeling becomes something they need to chase. When everything feels good and you escape the humdrum of the normal world around you, it makes sense to try and chase that feeling, right?

If you or someone else you know is constantly making references to “can’t wait for a…” or “would just love to…” about their new favorite past-time, they could be in significant trouble.

Refers To It Like Essential Habits

This is a rather obvious one that we can notice very easily in others, but not so much in ourselves. A smoker will, for example, have a cigarette in as part of their routine. An alcoholic will count having a drink as part of their normal day, too. It becomes almost as engrained in yourself as going for a shower, or eating. This isn’t a good thing and can be a key indicator of addiction in someone.

Downplays Their Habit

Noticed a friend or loved one – or even someone telling you – that habits are getting a bit out of control? Then it needs to be looked into. For an addict, though, it becomes much easier to downplay the significance of the substance. “I could stop if I wanted!” is a term many addicts have produced in the past. It’s easy to delude yourself into thinking that you don’t want to stop, rather than you can’t.

These are subtle signs that you might notice in someone who is doing very well for themselves. Left unchecked, and personal success will be a thing of the past – these are three key traits of an addict. If you are struggling to keep a family member friend who is suffering from addiction – or even if it’s you personally – then looking into the benefits of rehabilitation is very much worthwhile. Addiction can seem unstoppable, but rather than give in you can fight back and make a positive and engrained difference to your lifestyle.
