Non-Surgical Treatment OptionsOne new drug designed to treat double chins is Kybella. Newly approved by the Food and Drug Administration, it is administered by injection. Unlike surgical treatments such as face lifts or liposuction, Kybella is an effective, non-surgical alternative with a high rate of success. “It is a chemical equivalent of deoxycholic acid, a metabolic byproduct that is produced naturally in the body to help absorb fats,” explains Dr. Lieb. When injected, Kybella actually bursts the fat cell membrane, which liquefies the fat and causes it to get absorbed by the body. After injecting a local anesthetic, your doctor injects Kybella into the area beneath the chin to destroy the fat cells that are contributing the double chin.
“Most patients will require between two and four treatments, one per month, with severe cases requiring up to six treatments,” says Dr. Lieb. Because it causes only mild pain and swelling, it will not interfere with your daily routine. “Optimal results are seen three to four months after the treatment is complete.” Another non-surgical option is the CoolSculpting procedure. Dr. Lieb explains that this FDA cleared and already proven procedure has newly been indicated for treating under the chin. This non-surgical treatment that uses precisely controlled cooling to reduce stubborn fat under the chin. It safely delivers cool temperatures to the fat cells to gently and effectively crystallize (freeze) them, inducing programmed cell death. Over time, your body naturally processes and eliminates these dead fat cells, leaving a more sculpted and defined chin. “The procedure requires no needles, surgery or downtime, and you should notice positive results 2-3 months after just one to two treatments,” says Dr. Lieb.
Finally, Ulthera is a third non-surgical alternative that uses ultrasound energy to tighten the skin under the upper neck, reducing the double chin. “It swaps the tools of more invasive surgical methods for an ultrasound wand which heats the tissue under the surface of the skin to stimulate the production of new collagen and elastic tissue,” says Dr. Lieb. Over 2-3 months, the ultrasound procedure produces a firmer, less saggy chin.
Dr. Lieb concludes that there are many good non-surgical options available today for treating a double chin and advises patients to talk with their dermatologist to see which approach is most appropriate for them.
