(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Eating a Paleo diet may benefit you if you live with Celiac disease. This digestive disorder, which causes severe stomach upset after the ingestion of gluten, affects millions of people. The symptoms of Celiac disease are similar to those of wheat allergies; however, the UCLA Division of Digestive Diseases notes that while the two are related, Celiac disease can cause severe issues such as hair loss, liver problems, and skin issues. If you suffer from this disease or from any type of wheat allergy, switching to Paleo diet may ease your symptoms because the foods on your diet will not be processed, and many foods that are often contain gluten.

If you decide to start eating a Paleo diet because of Celiac disease, you should consider talking to your doctor before doing so. Not only will your physician be able to give you advice about whether the diet is right for you but he or she can also help you monitor your symptoms and progress based on your new diet. Keep a food journal and write down whether you are experiencing relief on a daily basis so you can let your doctor know whether your diet needs adjusting or if you need or eliminate certain foods.

Following the Paleo Diet

If you and your doctor have decided that the Paleo diet is right for you, the time has come to fill your pantry and fridge with new foods. It is important to keep in mind that everything in your new diet should be fresh, never frozen, so meal planning may be more challenging than in the past. Focus on purchasing fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meat, and fish. Much of your protein will come from meats, but you can also get it from nuts, beans, and legumes. If you are eating this diet to help you with weight loss, the protein you consume may help you feel fuller faster, which can help curb cravings.
While the Paleo community is split about keeping any type of dairy foods in your diet because many of them are considered processed, there are many substitutes you can use in their place. For example, the Hampton Creek Wikipedia page discusses a dairy-free, plant-based egg substitute the company has created, which is available in the form of cookie dough and thei company’s newest product, a mayonnaise that is also dairy free. The page also reports that this company hopes to find alternatives for preservatives and other food additives that following the Paleo diet is designed to eliminate.

Finding Paleo Recipes

There are many Paleo communities online where members post recipes you can try. Some websites, such as The Paleo Diet, list a comprehensive array of dishes for all three meals, plus snacks.
