(HealthNewsDigest.com) – It’s Memorial Day and everyone is out of town except you and the kids. Sometimes days like this can drag on because the kids are out of school, bored and stuck at home. At least that’s how it may feel if you have no plans and the kids are home for the day complaining. Take heart, there are ways to celebrate Memorial Day and have fun at home.
A good way to begin is with a family breakfast remembering the brave men and women who have given their lives to keep our country safe. After all, there would be no holiday without their sacrifices.
If the weather’s bad, stay inside and enjoy the day off at home:
- Read a good book you’ve been putting off, and if the kids are home, structure a reading circle where everyone is reading.
- Get to work on the paint project you’ve put off.
- Rent funny videos and have a movie day and laugh your heart out. Kids will enjoy it as well, especially if you have popcorn and let them each pick out one movie.
- Work on a family puzzle. Listen to the kids and gain insights into their lives you may have been too busy to notice before.
- Organize a family make your own pizza and let each person (no matter how small) contribute. Inviting friends adds a festive tone and makes the whole event more fun for everyone.
- Shut off the electronics and get out the board games. Kids love it when parents play games with them. Everyone can play Chutes and Ladders.
- Try that new low sugar healthy smoothie you’ve been waiting to make. Kids love s’mores and they’re just as good in the microwave as they are on the grill.
If the weather is good and you can venture outside, here are activities that will make everyone happy:
- Explore your city as if you were in a new city. Google places to go, and try new coffee shops as well as neighborhoods you’ve never seen before.
- Go to an arboretum or park and take a long walk. Exercise makes everyone feel better.
- Get the slip-n-slide out, put hula-hoops and other outside toys in the yard and have a backyard picnic. Family get-togethers boost everyone’s comradery and helps you remember you’re part of an awesome team. TEAM “FAMILY”!
It’s not where you go or what you do that’s most important for a wonderful holiday, but rather the feeling you get after spending a day engaged and enjoying the people you love most. -Mary Jo Rapini
