(HealthNewsDigest.com) – On Saturday, June 25, dentists and team members from nearly 400 Aspen Dental practices in 31 states will open their doors to provide a day of free dental care for thousands of veterans across the country. Veterans can call 1-844-AspenHMM to schedule an appointment in advance at a participating office. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

According to Melissa Thompson, DMD, a veteran of the Massachusetts National Guard, “many of our nation’s veterans struggle to find oral health care when they need it, due to cost or lack of insurance, and the VA doesn’t provide dental care benefits unless they are 100% disabled or have a service-related injury to their mouths. Not getting regular dental care can cause serious medical problems; and as a veteran, I also recognize the challenges our vets unfortunately face when trying to access care. That’s why being a part of Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement means so much to me. Being able to help my fellow veterans address their oral healthcare and help relieve them of dental pain is just one small way I can help make dentistry easier for my fellow vets.”

Of the more than 21 million veterans across the U.S. today, fewer than 10 million are enrolled for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health benefits, which for many does not include dental care benefits, and more than 1.2 million lack health insurance altogether. The June 25 day of free service will be Aspen Dental’s second annual, and is expected to be the largest single-day oral health initiative targeted at veterans. It’s part of Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement, a community-giving initiative launched in 2014 to deliver free dental care and oral health education to people in need. (Note: The veterans’ organization, Got Your 6, is also involved.)

About the Healthy Mouth Movement

The Healthy Mouth Movement is a community giving initiative launched by Aspen Dental and Oral Health America in 2014 to deliver free dental care and oral health education to people in need across the United States. In the past two years, over 4,000 Aspen Dental team members volunteered their time and talents to deliver $3.8 million in free dental care to nearly 7,000 patients in need. This year, the Healthy Mouth Movement will continue to focus on serving our nation’s veterans. As part of this commitment, Aspen Dental is once again teaming up with Got Your 6 to help empower veterans nationwide. For more information, visit www.HealthyMouthMovement.com
