(HealthNewsDigest.com) – CHICAGO – The American Medical Association (AMA), in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), today announced a continuing medical education (CME) video now available for physicians and other healthcare professionals that offers easy and practical strategies for discussing the Nutrition Facts label with patients.

“One of the simplest ways patients can make healthier food choices is referencing the Nutrition Facts label found on the back of all food and beverage packages,” said AMA President Andrew W. Gurman, M.D. “This new video showcases different strategies that physicians can easily incorporate into their workflow to help guide patients on making better food choices that will have a lasting, positive impact on their health outcomes.”

In May, the AMA applauded the FDA for releasing the new version of the Nutrition Facts label, which reflects the latest scientific research to help consumers maintain healthy dietary practices. The FDA will continue to work with the AMA to provide education to physicians on all aspects of the new Nutrition Facts label, emphasizing the major changes and improvements that patients will begin to see over the next two to three years.

“Poor diet can lead to obesity, which is linked to a host of life-threating conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Over the past several years, as part of the AMA’s strategic work toimprove our nation’s health, we have focused significant resources and efforts to helping reduce the number of adults living with prediabetes and uncontrolled blood pressure. We will continue to advocate for policies that help reduce the burden of preventable diseases to ensure patients live richer and fuller lives,” said Dr. Gurman.

To view the Nutrition Facts label video, which also includes companion patient educational materials, visit the AMA’s Education Center website for the FDA’s website Food Safety and Nutrition Resources for Healthcare Professionals. The video qualifies for AMA PRA Category 1 creditTM.
