(HealthNewsDigest.com) – A staggering 31.6 million adults in the US have eczema, according to the National Eczema Association. The hard reality is that it is much more common than even psoriasis, yet so many of us don’t know much about this skin condition, including how to treat it, what causes it, and how it can affect your lifestyle and outdoor activities. Because this pervasive skin condition is so misunderstood, it is important for everyone to know the real truth about eczema.

Jessie Cheung, MD, a Board Certified Dermatologist at DuPage Dermatology & Laser Center, sheds light on some of the most common misconceptions about eczema:

1.     Myth: Eczema can be cured with steroids

Reality: While steroids can help manage eczema, there is no cure for this chronic condition and it may flare up from time to time.

2. Myth: Eczema is just dry skin

Reality: Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition where the skin becomes red, dry, very itchy and scaly, and in severe cases, may weep, bleed and crust over. As you can imagine, it can cause more discomfort beyond simple skin dryness. It can also only be diagnosed by a healthcare professional.

3. Myth: You can ‘catch’ eczema from someone who has it

Reality: Eczema is definitely not contagious, so you cannot get the disease or give it to others by touching someone or having contact.

4. Myth: Eczema is a sign of poor personal hygiene

Reality: It is not caused by being dirty, or not bathing. In fact, some people over-wash their skin, which can trigger more eczema flare-ups.

5. Myth: You can’t go swimming if you have eczema

Reality: Yes you can! Unfortunately, chemicals and chlorine, as well as salt water tend to exacerbate symptoms, so you may have to be careful. You can do more than just dip your toes in the water as long as before and after swimming, you rinse your skin and apply a skin barrier protectant.

One dermatologist’s favorite eczema solution is EpiCeram®, an FDA-approved topical prescription cream packed with essential lipids to help repair the skin’s barrier and is also formulated to keep the skin at a healthy pH. EpiCeram® is only available by prescription from your doctor.
