(HealthNewsDigest.com) – AVERILL PARK, NY – June 6, 2017 — Professional burnout has become a crisis in healthcare.  A national survey published in the Archives of Internal Medicine reports that U.S. physicians and medical professionals suffer a higher rate of burnout than American workers in other fields.  According to the 2017 AMA Medscape Physician Lifestyle Report, 46% of all physicians responded that they experienced burnout.

Burnout is commonly defined as a loss of enthusiasm for work, emotional exhaustion, feelings of cynicism and a low sense of personal accomplishment.  In short, medical workers are stressed on the job. The result is that the quality of care goes down and medical errors go up.  A growing number of studies suggest that the practices of meditation, yoga and mindfulness techniques appear to be a helpful approach in reducing burnout.

Leonard Perlmutter, founder of The American Meditation Institute (AMI), and author of “Transformation,” The Journal of Meditation as Mind/Body Medicine and the new award-winning book The Heart and Science of Yoga: Empowering Self-Care Program for a Happy, Healthy, Joyful Life, is helping to solve the problem of physician burnout through his annual CME accredited retreat, “The Heart and Science of Yoga.”

The four-day retreat, held July 13-16 at AMI’s scenic campus in Averill Park, New York, targets physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other medical professionals and provides a comprehensive and holistic self-care & wellness program taught by Perlmutter himself. The program is accredited by the Albany Medical College, American Medical Association and the American Nurses Association and is certified to offer 18 hours of continuing medical education credit.

The only comprehensive Yoga Science program in the country, the course has been proven to be highly effective. A retroactive study of previous participants clearly shows the benefits of lowered blood pressure, lowered heart rate, improved restorative sleep, improved energy levels, significant reductions in stress and fear and much more.

To provide each participant a personal self-care plan, the retreat offers complete instruction in AMI Meditation, stress and pain management, easy-gentle yoga and diaphragmatic breathing.  The core curriculum has been endorsed by such noted physicians as Dean Ornish, MD, Bernie Siegel MD and Mehmet Oz MD.

According to Dr. Tony Santilli MD of Schenectady, NY: “The retreat has had a profound effect on both my personal and professional life.  I find it to be of great value to my patients.”  Echoing that sentiment, Dr. Prashant Kaushik MD of Albany, NY says: “From my perspective and personal experience, this course would benefit any physician in the practice of healing.”

According to Perlmutter, the course is designed for first-time and experienced meditators and specifically for physicians, nurses and therapists.  For information about the American Meditation Institute and their course offerings and events go to americanmeditation.org.
