(HealthNewsDigest.com) – This year marks the 10th anniversary of Falls Prevention Awareness Day (FPAD) on September 22nd This day was established to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults.
Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs. In 2014 alone, older Americans experienced 29 million falls causing seven million injuries and costing an estimated $31 billion in annual Medicare costs.
With more than 10,000 older Americans turning 65 each day, the number of fall-related injuries and deaths is expected to surge. The financial toll for older adult falls will increase as the population ages and it may reach $67.7 billion by 2020.
