Lip Balm Addict? Here’s Why You Constantly Need to Reapply

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – You know it’s winter when all you want to do is apply lip balm—and then reapply again. Your red, raw, chapped lips can’t get enough of the stuff, but swiping it on repeatedly may be doing more harm than good.

Your pucker is stacked up against some big odds in the winter. “Lips are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to battling the elements because even normal lips produce too little of the lipids needed for an effective barrier,” says Peter M. Elias, M.D., Professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of California San Francisco. “The problem is exacerbated in winter by the reduced environmental humidity due to forced air heat, which increases water loss, making the barrier problem worse,” he explains.

The culprit for compulsive reapplication: Traditional lip balms fall short. They can contain irritating allergens, like mint, dyes, or preservatives, which make dryness worse. You swipe it on, the moisture feels good, but the ingredients further produce parchedness, and so you have to swipe it on again. And the cycle repeats.

Solution: The ideal lip balm is one that replaces missing lipids and brings lips back to health. EpiCeram-L is the first lipid based lip care that contains these three essential lipids—ceramide, free fatty acids, and cholesterol—to restore proper barrier function. Then, there’s what’s not in it. EpiCeram-L is steroid-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, petrolatum-free, fragrance-free, and color-free.
