(HealthNewsDigest.com) – WASHINGTON – Following is a statement from Jessica Henderson Daniel, PhD, president of the American Psychological Association, for National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day:
“As we mark National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, we reaffirm the American Psychological Association’s commitment to children’s mental health and recovery in the aftermath of trauma.
“Our experiences in childhood have a profound impact on the trajectory of our lives and our overall health and well-being. There is an immense need for mental health care in our country today, and disparities are particularly distinct for children and teens in low-income communities, ethnic minorities and those with special needs.
“An estimated two-thirds of children report having experienced at least one traumatic event by age 16. Untreated child and adolescent mental health problems that result from trauma constitute a public health challenge for our nation.”
APA is partnering with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for Awareness Day 2018: Partnering for Health and Hope Following Trauma. This town hall discussion, featuring APA CEO Arthur C. Evans Jr., PhD, will focus on the importance of an integrated health approach to supporting children and young adults who have experienced trauma.
