(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Starting a home garden has become an interest for people of all ages. Besides the advantage of being able to produce your own fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs, having a garden in your home has a plethora of other benefits. It can enhance your physical and emotional well-being, build bonds, help the community, and save the environment. Though it takes a lot of tender love and care, gardening has been proven time and time again to be worth the effort.

Increases Your Physical Activity

Most people today live a sedentary lifestyle. They spend hours a day sitting at the office and then several more hours at home on the couch. This type of lifestyle can cause weight problems, heart trouble, and a host of other medical issues. Gardening, however, can change that. The task of finding the best grass seed for sale, piling up the soil, making composts, tending to our crops, and harvesting can really help you work up a sweat. Those who garden may notice benefits like improve muscle, bone, and joint strength which reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and more.

Better Nutrition

There’s something about putting your hard work into a garden and producing crops that makes you feel special. It encourages you to want to eat the “fruits of your labor” providing you with better nutrition. It’s also worth pointing out that as most produce from the grocery stores is packed with pesticides and grown in fertilizers with harmful chemicals. Growing your own fruits and vegetables, therefore, gives you power to choose how your crops are grown. Choosing organic fertilizers and natural pesticides allows you to produce organic, clean, food which is safer and better for you.

It’s Therapeutic

Gardening isn’t just great for getting organic produce and exercise, but it has also been known to help reduce stress. Though the work can sometimes be strenuous, it connects you with nature and gives you time to calm down and relax. As you go through the process of planting seeds and watching them grow, the experience helps to put life into perspective in a whole new way. Gardening can teach you to focus on the beauty of life and nature which is a great way to take your mind off the stresses in your own life.

Keeps the Mind Sharp

Though there are some crops, plants, and flowers that are easy to grow, maintaining a healthy home garden takes skill and education. Everything from planning the layout and choosing the soils to planting the seeds and choosing a fertilizer takes research. As you work each day to produce crops, you’re learning and stimulating the mind. That’s probably why gardening is highly recommended to seniors to ward off dementia.

Builds Bonds

Having a home garden can be something great to tend to alone, but it’s even more fun when you can take care of it with someone you love. It’s a great hobby for anyone of any age to have. Whether you garden with your spouse, children, grandchildren, or friends, spending this quality time together and working as a team to create something beautiful and/or nutritious is a boost to your mental well-being.

Helps the Environment

You may not believe this, but your tiny home garden can do a lot to save the environment. Home gardens help to reduce pollution as plants absorb carbon monoxide and release oxygen. Growing your own crops means you don’t have to use the gas to go to the store, you also help reduce the demand for costly transported fruits and veggies. Last, but not least, you get to recycle items from your kitchen that would otherwise be thrown away to make compost and plant holders.

Who knew that gardening could have so many benefits to your health? Starting a home garden is a great way to get a good workout, help the environment, introduce better nutrition, bond with families, sharpen the mind, and relieve stress. If you’ve never had a garden before, or wouldn’t consider yourself to have a green thumb, it’s ok. There are plenty of resources you can use online to determine everything from the best soil and grass seed to the easiest crops and best fertilizers. Start small and before long, you’ll be a pro.
