Have We Turned the Corner on Drug Overdose Deaths?

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Albany, NY — Data released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) earlier this week showed drug overdose deaths have declined by 5 percent, from 72,000 in 2017 to just under 68,000 in 2018. However, new analysis from the Rockefeller Institute cautions that it may be too early to celebrate a triumph over the opioid epidemic in the US.

The analysis gives several reasons to remain cautiously optimistic about the reported decrease in overdose deaths over the past year, emphasizing that, although the data represent important gains, these provisional results remain modest and may change in the future.
“These new data from the CDC offer hope,” said Rockefeller Institute Interim Executive Director Patricia Strach. “While acknowledging these successes is important, it is also important to remember that the fight isn’t over. Federal and state officials must continue their efforts to maintain these results in the future.”

The analysis puts the new CDC data in perspective and calls attention to the need for more robust data collection and policy intervention.
