(HealthNewsDigest.com) – With schools transitioning to online learning due to the coronavirus, an education scholar at Binghamton University, State University of New York says that not all students may be benefitting from virtual education. Adam Laats, professor of education and history at Binghamton University, says that students from lower-resource schools are struggling with remote learning due to a lack of proper resources and guidance, exposing the class divide in educational opportunity.

“The crisis is exposing and exacerbating the existing divides in educational opportunity. Students from high-resource homes attending high-resource schools are weathering this crisis in relatively fine shape. The crisis is mainly an inconvenience for them and a sad lack of face-to-face social interaction,” Laats said. “For lower-income students attending lower-resource schools, this crisis is an educational crisis, as well as a financial and health crisis. Without home internet or parents to guide them at home, students from lower-income homes are enduring a significant lack of educational opportunity during this crisis that will likely endure for years to come
