(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affects how you feel, think and behave, and it can lead to emotional and physical problems.

Medications and psychotherapy are effective for most people with depression. If you have severe depression, you may need a hospital stay, or you may need to participate in an outpatient treatment program until your symptoms improve.

Antidepressants are a common treatment for depression. Although antidepressants may not cure depression, they can reduce symptoms.

A number of antidepressants are available that work in slightly different ways and have different side effects. The first antidepressant you try may work fine. But if it doesn’t relieve your symptoms or it causes side effects that bother you, you may need to try another. With persistence, you and your health care provider should be able to find one that works better for you.
