(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Face masks are crucial to reducing the risk of COVID-19. But wearing a face mask for a long period of time may irritate the skin — especially for people who have acne or skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
Fortunately, you don’t have to choose between protecting your health and protecting your skin. Keep the skin under your mask healthy with these tips:
- Find a good fit. Your mask should be tight enough that it won’t slip or fall off. But it shouldn’t be so tight that it bruises your skin.
- Start with a clean face. Before you put on your mask, wash and dry your face. Try not to wear makeup or foundation under your mask. These products can cause your skin to break out in acne or a rash.
- Moisturize. Rub a thin layer of lotion or cream containing zinc oxide on high-friction areas of your face. The zinc oxide helps moisturize and protect. You can typically find these creams at drugstores. Hint: Some sunscreens contain zinc oxide.
- Wash your face again after wearing your mask. When you remove your mask, wash your face and neck with soap and water. Then apply a moisturizing cream.
- Keep your masks clean. Cloth masks should be washed daily with laundry detergent, either by hand or in a machine. Hand-washing is easier on the mask.
