Best diet for 2023 is the science-backed Mediterranean style of eating

For the sixth year in a row, the Mediterranean diet has won the coveted gold medal as this year’s best overall diet in rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

For your consideration:

Foods in the Mediterranean diet include

  1. Fruits: Tomatoes, oranges, apples, bananas, pears, grapes, dates, figs, melons, pomegranates, berries
  2. Vegetables: Leafy greens, bell peppers, onions, garlic, eggplant, cauliflower, zucchini, carrots, cucumbers, artichokes
  3. Legumes: Beans, lentils, chickpeas, peas, peanuts, lentils
  4. Nuts and seeds: Almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, walnuts, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds
  5. Grains: Wheat, oats, corn, rice, quinoa, barley, rye
  6. Fish and seafood: Salmon, sardines, tuna, trout, mackerel, shrimp, crab, mussels
  7. Poultry: Chicken, turkey, duck
  8. Dairy: Cheese, yogurt, milk, butter
  9. Herbs and spices: Basil, oregano, parsley, mint, rosemary, thyme, garlic, turmeric, cumin
