Too Old for a Nose Job?

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – While the majority of cosmetic surgery procedures are performed on middle-aged and older patients, rhinoplasty is one of the exceptions to this rule. Most rhinoplasty patients are between their late teens and middle age. This is because most people who undergo the procedure have hated their nose for many, many years, and attempt to have any flaws corrected as soon as possible. While children must wait until the nose is fully matured before undergoing the procedure (usually between the ages of 15 and 17), there is no official age limit on rhinoplasty. Though some older patients are worried about undergoing the procedure, there aren’t many special notes and caveats for rhinoplasty for people past middle age. Nevertheless, if you’re worried about possible side effects and risks, here are some things to be aware of.

Changes to the Nose

Some older patients who seek rhinoplasty have never had a problem with their nose before, but age can change the nose somewhat. The internal structure of the nose won’t change, but there may be cartilage deterioration, changes to the skin, and other factors that can cause a droopy appearance. These changes are often not as dramatic as those that take place in the rest of the face, but they can still be distressing.

Anesthesia Risks

As with any major plastic surgery, rhinoplasty requires the patient to be put under general anesthesia for the procedure. Older patients are at greater risk for complications with anesthesia, and surgery takes a greater toll on the body with age.

Skin Quality

As we age, our skin deteriorates and becomes less elastic and flexible. Older patients need to be particularly careful in selecting a specialist to perform the surgery, since skin quality can be a tricky issue to work with. An inexperienced surgeon can compromise the rhinoplasty results if he or she doesn’t know how to handle aging skin.

Medications & Recovery

Recovery can be tougher on older patients, so budgeting enough time and getting help during recovery makes a huge difference. The extent of the surgery also helps determine the course of the recovery process. Preventing infection and a poor outcome is key during any rhinoplasty recovery phase, but particularly for older patients.

Finding a Surgeon

Despite these minor pitfalls, having nasal surgery past middle age is quite safe. If you’re ready to speak to a Toronto rhinoplasty specialist about your case, be sure to select an experienced, board certified facial plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Robert A. Mounsey. Dr. Mounsey offers expert care at Revesse in the Toronto area, and offers a range of facial procedures. Call 416.438.2499 today to set up your consultation or visit:http://www.revesse.ca.
