Scientists Identify Protein that Keeps Stem Cells Poised for Action

Posted on December 30, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Like a child awaiting the arrival of Christmas, embryonic stem cells exist in a state of permanent anticipation. They must balance the ability to quickly become more specialized cell types with the cellular chaos that could occur should they act too early (stop shaking those presents, kids!).

New Skin Stem Cells Surprisingly Similar to Those Found in Embryos

Posted on December 8, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Scientists have discovered a new type of stem cell in the skin that acts surprisingly like certain stem cells found in embryos: both can generate fat, bone, cartilage, and even nerve cells. These newly-described dermal stem cells may one day prove useful for treating neurological disorders and persistent wounds, such as diabetic ulcers, says Freda Miller, an HHMI international research scholar.

Rockefeller Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines Now Available Through NIH Registry

Posted on December 5, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Two human embryonic stem cell lines, derived by Rockefeller University scientists, are among the first 13 human embryonic stem cell lines for use in research funded by the National Institutes of Health under the NIH Guidelines for Human Stem Cell Research adopted in July 2009.

Adult Stem Cells May Help Repair Muscle Cells Damaged by Heart Attack

Posted on December 3, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – CHICAGO) – Adult stem cells may help repair heart tissue damaged by heart attack according to the findings of a new study to be published in the December 8 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Results from the Phase I study show stem cells from donor bone marrow appear to help heart attack patients recover better by growing new blood vessels to bring more oxygen to the heart.

UNMC Research Team Makes Major Breakthrough in Stem Cell Research

Posted on October 23, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – A University of Nebraska Medical Center research team led by Iqbal Ahmad, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, has reprogrammed regular body cells to resemble embryonic stem cells without the use of potentially harmful foreign genetic material.

Safer Method for Transforming Skin Cells Into Stem Cells

Posted on August 21, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – AURORA, Colo. – Researchers at the University of Colorado Denver’s School of Medicine have announced a new way to convert human skin cells to stem cells. In late 2007, a Japanese team reported that they had inserted four human genes into ordinary human skin cells and reprogrammed those cells into stem cells—cells possessing the same properties as embryonic stem cells, that could then become almost any other cell in the body.

World’s First Cardiac Adult Stem Cell Patient Receives Infusion

Posted on July 24, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – LOUISVILLE, Ky., — Michael (Mike) Jones has become the world’s first recipient of adult cardiac stem cells to treat congestive heart failure. Jones’ infusion on July 17 marks the world’s first phase-one FDA-approved clinical trial using adult cardiac stem cells to treat heart disease. The clinical trial is being conducted by a team of University of Louisville physicians at Jewish Hospital.

NIH Stem Cell Rules Seriously Flawed, says Stanford Expert

Posted on July 7, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – STANFORD, Calif. – Today the National Institutes of Health released their final guidelines detailing what types of human embryonic stem cell research will qualify for federal funding. Although the rules permit federal funding of research on embryonic stem cell lines produced from excess early embryos from in vitro fertilization clinics, they disallow federal support of two key techniques used to derive embryonic stem cells in animals: that of transferring the genetic material from one cell into an egg without a nucleus, and that of stimulating an unfertilized egg to divide.

Stanford Discovery Pinpoints New Connection Between Cancer Cells, Stem Cells

Posted on July 4, 2009

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – STANFORD, Calif. — A molecule called telomerase, best known for enabling unlimited cell division of stem cells and cancer cells, has a surprising additional role in the expression of genes in an important stem cell regulatory pathway, say researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The unexpected finding may lead to new anticancer therapies and a greater understanding of how adult and embryonic stem cells divide and specialize.
