(HealthNewsDigest.com) – In October 2005, 19 year-old college student Tamara Mena and her boyfriend Patrick were returning to San Diego from a brief trip to Mexico when their cab hit a horse. The horse fell on the top of the car, crushing it and immediately killing the cab driver and Patrick. Tamara suffered a complete spinal cord injury causing paralysis from her chest down. Following the life-changing injury, she completely lost hope of ever being able to walk again until she met another patient who told her about this technology, new to rehab centers, called the exoskeleton.
On Wednesday, May 9, Tamara walks on stage on the set of the Emmy Award-winning syndicated daytime TV talk show THE DOCTORS and shares her powerful and emotional story: how she lost both the love of her life and hope for a normal life…and eventually regained both.

About the Exoskeleton
Tamara is a test pilot for Ekso Bionics, a company at the forefront of robotic exoskeleton technology, which can replace or augment human capabilities (and will hopefully be used for both military and recreational uses in the future). The exoskeleton Tamara is wearing in this clip is essentially a suit made of four motors, two batteries and a computer. Electric motors in the hips and knees mimic the action of muscles, and sensors at the hips, knees and feet provide feedback to the computer housed in a backpack.
