(HealthNewsDiget.com) – 1870 was a year of “firsts” in America. The National Weather Service made its first meteorological forecast. The first African-American Congressman was sworn into office. Standard Oil Company first opened its doors for business. And in Philadelphia, people were getting effective relief for minor sore throat irritation from Pine Brothers, America’s first commercially sold throat drop. Pine Brothers lozenges soon became a household name across the country. Now after being swallowed up (no pun intended) in a series of business acquisitions and nearly disappearing, the original Pine Brothers softish throat drops are back on store shelves and making a lot of loyal consumers very happy.
Americans love a classic
When something is this good, it never quite loses its following. That’s what’s happened with Pine Brothers. It’s precise blend of original, soothing ingredients – including glycerin and gum acacia – are central to the brand’s enduring effectiveness and appeal.
In 1930, Pine Brothers was sold to the Life Savers Company and continued to flourish. Known for its ‘soft drop consistency’, Pine Brothers lozenges became a favorite of adults and children alike. The product, which attracted healthiest sales in the eastern and northern states due to its icy winters, reached its peak popularity in the 1970s.
The company was sold by Life Savers, and then was re-sold and acquired a number of times. Despite a legion of loyal consumers, it languished. Sales further declined when cost cutting changes were made to the original recipes, packaging became stale and marketing non-existent; and production moved overseas.
That’s now changed. It has been acquired by successful entrepreneur Victoria Knight-McDowell’s company 3 Sisters Home Products. Best known for creating Airborne immune support supplement, Knight-McDowell has brought back the popular original formulas and flavors – Natural Honey and Wild Cherry – and introduced handier, modernized packaging. She also brought production back to the U.S.
Thank you letters are pouring in
At first, the resurrected original formula Pine Brothers softish throat drops were sold only online. “We heard from thousands of people asking us where they could buy Pine Brothers locally. It’s rare to find that kind of support,” comments Knight-McDowell. Then in fall 2011, it became available at CVS where it now ranks number 11 out of 81 throat lozenge brands carried by the retail chain. Many other retail chains soon followed.
“We’re now getting a lot of letters thanking us for bringing Pine Brothers back. The people who love it are die-hard fans and very loyal,” she says. Pine Brothers’ formulas are soothing without being overpowering, and so can easily used as frequently as desired. “The brand’s popularity is well-founded because it works,” explains Knight-McDowell.
